Located in Toronto, Ontario, Canada

The history of the Co-op is noted, in part. In 1980 approximately two-thirds of the tenants decided to form a Co-op. Swansea Village Co-op was incorporated on February 26, 1980. Consequently, about 20 percent of the tenants moved out, the 10 percent who did not join the Co-op remained as non-members.

Bridlewood Co-operative Homes Inc., a zero-equity 131 unit project located in Essex, Ontario, Canada. For the past 15 years this Co-op has attempted by various means to sell the units for the personal benefit of Members. The Co-op stopped paying its mortgage, and CHF Canada believed that this could be part of a plan to force its lender to foreclose and sell the properties in bulk at a discount. The Board of Directors and Membership had its control of the Co-op removed when a receiver-manager was appointed to the Co-op by the Superior Court at the request of CHF Canada on June 29, 2011. In 2005, concerns the Co-op Membership was attempting convert to Condominium from Co-op by the purchase of their own units at discounted prices when the Court ruled against the sale.

Thornhill Green Co-operative Homes was a zero-equity 101 unit Co-op located in Thornhill, Ontario, Canada. At the Co-op Annual General Membership Meeting on September 23, 1997, the Co-op Membership unanimously approved their own proposal to convert the Co-op property to a private Condominium for their own personal self-interest. In 1998, the then Co-op Board and Members approached the Ministry of Housing regarding their proposal to convert the Co-op property into a Condominium. The proposed sale would have allowed the Co-op Members to purchase their own Co-op units by buying out the social housing mortgage, at purchase prices far below the Co-op market value. The Co-op Members proposal was unsuccessful as it violated provisions of the Co-operative Corporations Act, and Thornhill Green Co-op Articles of Incorporation.


The former Co-op was placed into recievership, in 2006 because of a combination of financial issues, and what appears to be Member personal self-interest, although some tried to rally, but failed to prevent the sale of the Co-op to HYI, the Region of York, Social Housing Company.

The coop and its principles worked very well until the mid-1990's. From the mid 1990's until 2007, it seems that poor management contributed to the demise of the three houses owned by the coop. It should be noted that students were not recruited and a full time manager/book keeper was employed during this period. Property taxes were not paid and the houses were lost due to tax sales.
